When I started my business, I had to write out a business plan. Makes sense, right? You need to know what your business goals are and how you’re going to reach them and a business plan is a handy tool that can help you do this. I dreaded it. I dragged my feet. I can be an excellent procrastinator when I want to be, especially if it’s something I reeeeeeallly don’t want to do. I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone reading this who has never written a business plan before, but it’s not the easiest thing in the world to do.
I eventually finished my plan but the part I dreaded the most was the section called Business Objectives. Here was where I had to specify how many clients I wanted to add in the first six months of operation and how I was going to find them. How on earth was I supposed to know how to figure that out? I waffled around for a little while before I finally wrote down my number.
That number? One.
(Dream big, right?)
At the time, the idea of finding one other person in the world who thought I was good enough to enlist my services seemed like an awesome accomplishment and a very attainable goal.
Sitting here on September 1st, I am so lucky and thankful that A) my projection was WAY off and B) I didn’t start a business plan writing business. The last two months have far exceeded my expectations and I’m thrilled to have clients (plural, woohoo!) who have given me the opportunity to grow creatively, personally, and as a business.
Check out my updated projects page for a recap of some of my recent pieces…and if you are a business or know any businesses looking for a super-fun creative mind to help reach their marketing goals, send them my way!
